As part of the European Union´s SNS-JU TrialsNet project, YBVR delivered an unparalleled fan experience, demonstrating how Virtual Reality (VR) and immersive video can transform live sporting events in collaboration with Telefonica, Ericsson España, and Universidad Carlos III Madrid.
The trial ran during a high-stakes basketball faceoff between Movistar Estudiantes and Súper Agropal Palencia, giving fans an unforgettable viewing experience.
With Telefónica providing robust 5G connectivity and Ericsson delivering state-of-the-art infrastructure, YBVR’s technology allowed audiences to watch the game from multiple perspectives—either from the comfort of home or directly within the stadium.
Two Ways to Experience the Action of Live Sports
YBVR’s “Immersive Fan Engagement” use case showcased two unique applications:
- At-Home VR Experience: Fans watching remotely were transported courtside through YBVR’s VR technology, enjoying an immersive front-row view via VR headsets.
- In-Stadium Enhanced Viewing: with Xtadium, fans inside the arena could stream multiple live camera angles on their smartphones, seamlessly switching views and enjoying up-close moments, no matter where they were seated.
Both applications leveraged the high-speed, low-latency capabilities of 5G SA millimeter wave technology, ensuring seamless, real-time transmission of ultra-high-definition immersive content.
Pioneering the Future of Live Entertainment
This milestone at Movistar Arena is more than a technological win, it’s a glimpse into the future of live sports.
By bringing immersive, interactive viewing to the forefront, YBVR opens up new opportunities for sports leagues, broadcasters, and event organizers to engage fans and unlock new revenue streams.
As part of the broader TrialsNet initiative, this successful showcase highlights how 5G and immersive media can work hand-in-hand to revolutionize entertainment.
